Birthmark Removal

PATIENT INFORMATION, FOLLOW UP & POST TREATMENT
CARE FOR PHOTODERM

1. PAIN: There may be a feeling of discomfort during treatment. Some of the patients report a feeling of a rubber band snap. This discomfort may range from mild to moderate and does not last long. A burning sensation may last for up to an hour. Cold compress may be used if desired. Generally no pain medication is required.

2. HEALING: There is always the slight possibility of developing a crust or blister. This is superficial, this does not result in any scarring and is treated like sunburn or any other blister.

3. PIGMENT CHANGES: The treated areas will probably heal without any pigment changes however there is always a chance that Hyper-pigmentation (darker) or hypo-pigmentation (lighter) areas may occur. These are usually temporary and will fade away in 1-6 months. Sun exposure must be avoided as exposure may intensify a Hyper-pigmented patch. It is very rare that these changes will be permanent.

4. SCARRING: This is very rare, it is important to follow all the post-treatment instructions carefully.

5. EXCESSING SWELLING: May occur immediately after treatment especially if the face has been treated. This is temporary. Cold packs and hydrocortisone preparations will reduce the swelling.

6. FRAGILE SKIN: The skin that has been treated is fragile. It should not be rubbed when applying makeup. Shaving, Waxing and other forms of hair removal should be avoided for at least two weeks after treatment.

7. TEST PATCHES: Treatment may start with test patches to see individual skin response to treatment.

Post treatment care

1. Care should be taken to prevent trauma to the treated area for the first 4-5 days following treatment. Shaving should be avoided post treatment for a period of 2 weeks.

2. Sun block (NOT SUNSCREEN) should be used and avoid exposure to the sunlight during the treatment period. Sun tanning increase the risk for injury to the skin during treatment.

3. Cold packs, Aloe Vera gel or Callendulla gel may be used to relieve temporary discomfort.

4. Make up can be used as long as the skin is not broken
